Assessment briefing and typeface rational

Today we had an assessment briefing in preparation for the final OUGD403 submission. The briefing helped me see just how much work I have to do in the next week, checking I have everything against the list on e studio and ensuring I have documented all of my working. I have no doubt the work I have produced is largely to a high standard however conveying this across my sketchbook, blog and personal archive will require a lot of concentrated effort over this week and the weekend. A lot of this week is independent study (Tuesday and Wednesday after 10:30) meaning its important for me to plan and manage my time well to complete everything that is required.

My typeface in its initial form is completed already as I worked on it today and over the weekend. This gives me the opportunity to dip back into previous work and make sure it ticks all of the boxes for submission. However I must also start to think about a possible type specimen to display my finished face. Nothing immediately springs to mind given the literal, adverb/adjective definition of sideling but I'm sure if I continue to develop the face and the explore the idea of creating a stencil or vinyl cut lettering, something will emerge.

After the briefing we were tasked with beginning to write typeface rationals for our design boards, another think I must push on with this week.

My first draft rational:

Sideling is a dynamic oblique in its roman format that uses Gestalts theory of continuation. Continuation is the principal, through which the eye is drawn along a path, preferring to see a single continuous figure than separate glyphs. Giving each letter a vanishing point along any vertical lines creates this illusion. Each letter appears to incline towards the right creating an element of gravitational potential combined with balance and poise. The end product is akin to an overhanging rock face, the ultimate incline. The highly directional nature of the typeface would suggest an application to way finding or super graphics. However its sleek appearance could also lend itself to contemporary editorial practice.

I feel this rational is a very strong start. However I must work on the length of it, making it as concise as possible as well as picking out a list of 7 or so works that represent my type face.
