Interpretation of studio brief 2
The brief is asking me to undertake a rebrand for either: the Occasional Geometries exhibition we have been studying, its curator Rana Begum or one of the featured artists. However the rebrand is centred around a new and original logo type that would sit on any promotional or informational material and on the YSP website. I must come up with 5 ideas for Friday and then develop the idea deemed to have the most potential by myself and my peers. The only real restrictions are that it has to use one of Vignelli's six faces and has to start off in grayscale.
I think one key element of my design process and perhaps something that is a little unclear, is to what extent we should abstract the type. We are being encouraged to start thinking very laterally and abstract the forms to a great extent. However its not clear on the level of legibility thats required for the end product. One of my challenges will be finding the correct balance between form and function and considering both the client and target markets demands and needs while developing a highly lateral embodiment of the exhibition.
A longer project like this requires a broad range of contextual research across both obvious and obscure platforms. I must start my gathering information on the curator of my exhibition, Rana Begum and some of the artists exhibited as well as looking into some of the principles used within. My research should span across a range of media, from websites to print and even possibly audio visual contexts. This broad span of research should be reflected in my output at the interim crit where I aim to display a range of highly lateral ideas relevant to the brief.
An idea I wish to develop and explore further is using diagonal lines (a pattern I enjoy working with) possibly overlaid on other patterns, similar to one of the pieces in the Occasional Geometries exhibition itself. This builds on the overlay that I superimposed onto my anamorphic typography sculpture from the previous brief. Pat mentioned I could research dazzle camouflage as used on military ships, an area which interests me and seems a natural starting point.
