Crit with Orlando

Today we had a group crit with Orlando. I found the crit fairly demoralising as he appeared to not like the aesthetic we have been going for at all which was of course largely down to me with the typography and logotype. However, he did make some good points and highlighted areas we could work on. He enjoyed the theme of the origin of species on some level but felt we were going too far down the very traditional museum based route and perhaps losing touch with what we were aiming for which is a fair point. However, I feel he is essentially telling us to dumb down our idea and conceptualise it less. He wants something more clean and modern that advertises the exhibition on a more casual level as something people might enjoy and come down to for a few drinks. There was a general consensus around this within the group anyway but I feel like we shouldn't lose touch with the strong concept and theme.

He also commented on the inconsistencies within certain elements of the design which I do also understand but similarly, I feel this is to be expected at this early stage when the identity isn't concrete. To help combat this he suggested we break down into two groups that both work on different elements of output and, at least for today, attempt to come up with a new, more punch aesthetic. So in response to this, we divided into two groups and 4 and began to experiment with different forms. Both groups came back at the end of the day with surprisingly similar ideas involving using more blocky, contemporary type overlaid on top of imagery relating to the origin of species or music genres. This then lead to Brylle creating a new typeface which was a blocky san serif with curved off corners and missing crossbars on the A. This change in group roles left me feeling a little unsure of what I was doing as my original post of typography and logotype was now taken. However, I chipped in with ideas and waited for a role to crop up once we have the identity nailed down.
