Start of group work

Today we were given the brief for our group work which involves exhibition design for our end of year show. We will have to put together a pitch 10/15 minute to staff and second years about our idea, concept, branding collateral for the micro-genre of music exhibition.

The key information is:
  • Location
  • Time (week starting 4th June)
  • Level 4/5 exhibition (level 5 presenting objects around the same brief)
  • Social media links, hashtags and strategy for social media- countdown? build up interest, going on live on insta/social media, mentioning people, hashtagging.
  • Contact details
Considerations:
  • The format of poster, flyers, social media
  • Signage or way finds
  • Invites
  • Costs
  • Production (collateral must be reproducible)

Individually we must work on at least one thing on the group work and document own work in blog REGULARLY whilst conducting relevant research.

We then concluded the session by watching a talk from OK-RM co-founder Rory McGrath at Its Nice That's Nicer Tuesdays. I have heard about OK-RM before and know that they have worked with world-leading institutions, brands and publications alike to develop memorable and cutting edge graphic identities. They work on exhibitions branding and interface design for likes of Moscow’s Strelka Institute, Jack Self’s Real Review, and the Design Museum exhibition, Fear and Love.

At Nicer Tuesdays, Rory talked about the studio’s creative approach and recent projects, going into fascinating detail about its work for the Het Nieuwe Instituut’s Designing the Surface show. This element was particularly relevant to me as Het Nieuwe is based in Rotterdam so I will be referencing the project in my erasmus application.

Key elements he talked about in specific exhibitions were:
  • theatrical/fairground concept
  • taking that concept and using it to design various activities and themes within the exhibition e.g. use of space and objects to have a narrative with each other, having activities, a publication.
  • try to keep designs simple as possible, don't make it too complicated
  • investigate materials to be used
  • making diagrams and models of how everything will look like
  • looking at details
  • finding materials that have their own visual identity that is outside of graphic design the might not be used in the design
  • different visual cues to use in exhibitions.
