Today we completed our first publication of the new brief

I am excited to continue with studio brief two after a quick fire session of lateral thinking today. We started by getting into our bookbinding ground and sitting around a table with collage materials. Using a 12 page, non-bound booklet made up of red and white card each group member would make an alteration to a page or spread of their choice before passing to booklet to the left. Alterations could be made using any quick medium from collage to mark making. Each alteration lasted about 2 minutes and different rules were implemented to give visual variation and attempt to form some kind of theme. The process allowed for unexpected and interesting combinations of texture, context and form. This method of working is not something we are accustomed to so took us out of our comfort zones as we had been last week with Steve Hockett, mistakes and incomplete compositions were encouraged as they could be adapted in a highly lateral way by peers. Each person contributed with the thought in mind of contradicting the traditional zine as pages were altered in shape and clear windows were cut. Ben provided Letraset which gave an interesting dynamic as the crisp 2D typesetting contradicted the random 3D forms allowing for some very nice spreads. Some of my favourites:

I was really happy with the outcome of my zine which was then combined with elements from peers collections. In the end creating an eclectic mixture of forms. We were meant to find a unifying theme, however this seemed impossible with our zine so we decided to go with the fairly vague idea of a visual journey. This was partly because one page had a line drawing across it. So our concept was then to apply and effect to each spread progressively, taking the viewer on a visual journey. At first I suggested blurring each page as it went into the middle but this did weaken the effect of middle pages and made the type on them illegible so we instead played with contrast until a good balance was found. With the fanzine now complete we selected a yellow white paper stock that would remain consistent throughout and got to work printing.

At first I printed on white paper by mistake but then i managed to work it out and print on the correct stock. I decided to bind with staples and cover the bind with a complimentary blue tape.
