Making cell phone symphony typeface
Today I was focusing on creating the original typeface for my cell phone symphony poster. One of the elements that was praised in my last crit was the mixed up number design, in which numbers had been cut in half and reassembled to try and portray the scramble of digits within the concert. As a possible development I mentioned I had considered making a typeface an peers seemed to agree with that being a worthy investment of time. Its often good to start posters with a strong type face and then work out which visuals may fit as the type often makes or breaks a poster. With this in mind, I started out with the rounded edges of arial rounded, a stylistic choice due to my idea with numbers, I think of numbers as rounded things because often they are e.g. 0235689. I then set out some rules such as, only cut each number roughly 50/50 in half, try to not combine the same number, no inverting numbers and only cut horizontally or vertically. Some of these rules were harder to follow than others as I struggled to make letters such as N, O Y, M, H. To get round this I broke the no inverting rule and no same numbers rule, however I feel like it didn't take away from the aesthetic at all. I then photographed, image traced and edited my cut outs to create the final typeface. If I had time maybe it would be interesting to continue the face to a full alphabet however this would be very challenging and perhaps it works better as a one off for purpose anyway.
