Arnold Stark Lobel (May 22, 1933 – December 4, 1987) was an American author of children's books, including the Frog and Toad series and Mouse Soup. He both wrote and illustrated those picture books, as well as Fables, for which he won the 1981 Caldecott Medal recognizing the year's best-illustrated U.S. picture book.
The story of Frog and Toad was described as 'An Amphibious Celebration of Same-Sex Love' in an article by The New Yorker (2016) describing the representation of a homosexual relationship between the two characters released at a time when it was still a very taboo subject. This subtlety was not made public however until Lobel came out as gay in 1974 before tragically dying during the aids epidemic.
