One of these ideas was for a set of business cards that furthered my theme of reliance from the previous crit. This was my only idea that continued on this theme due to its 3D nature not naturally lending itself to primarily 2D logotypes. The final card was made with the intention of engaging the user and allowing theme to create their own freestanding geometric sculptures. This interactivity was an innovation I wanted to explore further and I certainly could have made the cards even more ergonomic and inclusive if I had more time.
One of my video ideas was a short clip in black and white that attempted to visually represent the 'occasional' nature of the geometries in the exhibition. Using a literal interpretation The O of occasional orbits a central point and then when it passes over its start point the word changes to Geometries. The idea came about from the obvious visual potential of the two words and I feel it was conceptually sound. However as with the business card the actual logotype without regards for its context was fairly bland and largely Futura. I could have moved away from the original typeface had I had more time, but this would be a development for another day. Video bellow
I had two ideas based around a simplified version of the line moire inspired logotype from earlier in the week. Both short videos featuring the diagonally lined spinning circle, aiming to create a sense of movement amongst the varied static lines beneath. The only distinguishing features was that one had orbital Os that moved around the composition giving greater potential for distortion. The other way just a more clean version, more suitable for a website without the orbits and with added colour. In this sense at certain points the two ideas would have looked completely different but the theme was very similar. Videos bellow
My final idea was a product/development form the line moire research and video work. It is to some extent a middle ground between the interactivity of the business cards and the other vein of work. The idea was for a range of collectable acetate posters that users could find and arrange to create the OG logotype. This was my favourite idea due to the amalgamation of the styles used and its simplicity makes for striking and professional looking outcomes.
Feedback from the crit itself was very mixed. Some people said my ideas were effective and appropriate and then one questioned their relevance to the exhibition, which I found an odd observation. However I know that this misunderstanding from my peers must at least be in part down to the way I described the ideas on my design board. The design board is definitely an area I need to have a look at again and its presentation was not helped by the fact that I didn't have time to print it off. This meant peers had to use one screen to view both the design board and 3 short videos! definitely a lack of organisation on my part. I feel positive about the fulfilment of the brief and my progress so far using a fairly new (to me) and confusing range of media. Despite the peer response not being as positive as I had expected there are lots of areas I'm happy with a few ones to work on into brief 3.
