Pattern - A historial panorama - William Justema

Today I decided to dip into a book I picked up over summer at a fete. I stumbled upon some relevant pictures and text continuing on from my line moire and dazzle camouflage research. The book features a break down of 7 historical types or features within patterns. Chapter 5 features is specifically orientated around geometries, so after a quick flick through I decided to stop on 5 and have a read.

The Geometrics title page itself is highly relevant to what I'm trying to do with its radially orientated black lines over lapping and creating abstract line moire patterns. I enjoy the ambiguity created as it hards to decipher exactly how many layers of lines are overlapped.

The dazzlers section really interested me. Featuring some 1960s OP art that I've definitely not seen before. The range of techniques has helped me see that there are other ways I could arrange my own lines although I would like to keep my ideas relatively simple especially with the added time pressure of animations.

The serpentine section interested me despite not all being directly relevant. However the idea that these ambiguous lines can be interpreted into a range of media such as embroided cloth mentioned intrigues me.
