After the interim crit last Friday it was suggested that I look into Dazzle camouflage. I got out a book from the library in an attempt to find out more. The book was largely history of war based so unsurprisingly I didn't read much of it. However I did find some of the summarising pages readable and enjoyed gaining a greater visual knowledge from the pictures.
The basic principle is by using complex, intersecting geometric shapes in contrasting colours, enemy ships cannot gage the targets speed, heading and distance away. Picasso claimed that cubists like himself had invented the camouflage sparking a relationship between art/design and war that became an iconic feature of the first and second world wars. The effectiveness was inconclusive as one of the major drawbacks was that a ship using the pattern was instantly recognisable as that of an adopters.
The OP art style ambiguity created by the patterns is something I am striving for with my diagonal lines design. I intend to build on this with further experimentation.
