Fashion collaboration with Reece

Since being set this brief its always been in the back of my mind to try and find a collaborator on fashion design due to my interest in the field. However with no clear brief and due to the intensity of fashion students other projects a collaboration has looked unlikely until now. Over the coming weeks, I will be working with Reece Clayton, whose specialist area is tailoring, on a mutually orchestrated and beneficial t-shirt design. Have known Reece for a while and in conversation, we both stated our interest in producing some graphic inclusive streetwear. This is an exciting prospect as I believe fashion is a very viable venture for a graphic designer and a personal interest of mine. I started by conducting some quick visual research into designers that I like.

One of the major inspirations behind the project is Louise Alsop's recent work for Liam Hodges and the two designers respectively. Having both graduated from Westminster in 2013 the pair produce ready to wear fashion with innovative, oversized cuts and layering and strong graphic elements drawing inspiration from their South East London settings. The typography is all done in house however it's hard to find out exactly who does it.

Louise Alsop
Although she graduated in BA Fashion there is a clear passion for typography and graphic composition within her work. I think the most effective applications amongst her own label are the outsider jumper for SS15 and a logo design for artist Englesia. I'm not a big fan of the line drawn stuff towards the bottom but the application of loose threads to extend the type into the piece is very inspiring.

Liam Hodges
Liam has a passion for cut and sew items that often incorporate a number of different textures and patterns and feature a powerful sense of nostalgia as well as the appropriation of dystopian, sci-fi and popular culture graphics. His works have become very accessible and entered the mainstream via collaborations with a major sportswear companies Fila and Ellesse as well as retailer urban outfitters. Typography is applied through a range of mediums from stencil to heat press. Although the intricacies of typography aren't a major focus, he will commission designers such as Louise Alsop to help work on graphic elements.
