The photography of Julia Gorton had come up a few time so far within my previous research so I decided to look into her work further. This uncovered not only photography from the era but also a currently active Instagram page @julia_gorton_nowave. Through this account and Julia, the aesthetic of No Wave lives on. This is a fascinating development in research as it is the first currently active link to the genre that I have found. Having followed said account for a few weeks now I have noticed that she promotes contemporary era related club nights in New York and hosts an annual punk and No wave zine fair in Scranton. She also shares a number of reworks of her No Wave photography which features collage and digital collage reworks of her old no wave photography (bellow). One element or a number of key aspects of the images are cut out and recoloured in her signature colour of pink. This follows a popular trend I have found within the visual language or the genre, with a spot of colour juxtaposing the black and white of the image. Her logotype itself is a very common no wave aesthetic also with an element of cut out and improvised stencil work about it and block san serif typography (above).
A pictogram used to promote 'SXSW' a night of no wave era events that she was doing a talk at. This could be used as inspiration for any possible pictograms within my own work. |
