Today we discussed our book covers so far and refined a clear direction to take one set in for the final week. I feel my presentation was well prepared and peers understood my ideas well allowing me to gain an idea of the positives and negatives. I am currently not 100% happy with my designs and felt that none of them was perfectly executed but I suppose this is to be expected from an initial ideas crit and there are certainly elements of ideas I can get behind.
One concept suggested was to use the example of the wooden spoon in the Wear and Tear essay from Munari's art as design and make it into a physical part of the book. A book that wears in certain places so that key cover text becomes less legible really appeals to me however I'm not sure how relevant the concept would be to the series and would need to find other physical manifestations to represent them. The idea of furthering my line work from the first Marber series was also raised as I could change the type of line for each book e.g. a drawn line for Klee and line of crumbs or footprints for frog and toad. Also it was widely agreed that I need to work with type more as admittedly this hasn't been my main area of concern in these early stages. I aim to make blurbs more typographically interesting and consider typeface and layout.
In the end it was agreed that my first two covers based on Munari and Klees work were my strongest and should be developed. The suggestion was made that I use the logo type and organic square grids of Klee as only a part of the cover with the Bruno Munari useless machines remade and photographed as background. I aim to make more three dimensional representations of the book specific mobiles. I then need to experiment with colour balance and how much colour plays a part in background image and foreground text. As an addition to this I think I should look into Munari's useless books more and perhaps incorporate a sleeve type approach for the text that is just a flap on top of the image. An overly complicated folding system would channel Munari and tie in nicely with the rest of the books. There is perhaps the concern that all of this will take a long time to do and I may not have time to fully produce it before Friday. However this isn't too much of a concern as I just need to have a representation for crit on Friday and the fully physical manifestations can follow over the weekend.
