Sideling - studio brief 3

On Friday I was given the word sideling as the starting point for a brief in which I shall create a full alphabet typeface and then work on applying it an appropriate context of my choice.

The first step was finding out exactly what sideling means:

Definition of sideling (adverb)

archaic

:in a sidelong direction :sideways
Definition of sideling (adjective)

1archaic :directed toward one side :oblique

2archaic :having an inclination :sloping
  • sideling ground

The definitions seemed very clear and logical. My initial thoughts are that this is both a good and bad thing. The word has obvious visual potential due to the directions and angles in the definition. However there could potentially be little or at least less contextual meaning behind a very literal word like this. For this reason its important I attempt to pursue more abstract angles of research to get a varied pool of initial ideas.

Peers in the activity said that I should look into using: italics, letters with only one side or one chunky side, continuous line, uppercase letters, serifs on one side creating imbalance, leaning ascenders and descenders, type as if falling, geometric forms and to make the face physically.
All of these are very relevant ideas and areas I look forward to pursuing.
